Get Golfing is proud to announce the resounding success of the inaugural Learn to Play Golf Day, held yesterday at Pyrford Lakes Golf Club in partnership with WheelPower. This groundbreaking event marks a significant milestone in the world of golf, as it is the first of its kind in the country, specifically designed to welcome and support disabled and wheelchair-bound individuals in discovering and enjoying the game of golf.
The Learn to Play Golf Day is part of Get Golfing’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and enhancing the lives of those around us through inclusive and accessible sporting opportunities. This special day offered participants a unique chance to learn the fundamentals of golf in a supportive and adaptive environment, reflecting the shared vision of Get Golfing and WheelPower to break down barriers and foster inclusivity in sports.
“Hosting the first Learn to Play Golf Day for disabled and wheelchair-bound individuals is a testament to our dedication to pushing boundaries and expanding the horizons of golf,” said Emma Robinson, Charities, Communities and Apprenticeships Director at Get Golfing.
WheelPower, the national charity for wheelchair sport, played a crucial role in making this event a reality. For over 75 years, WheelPower has been providing opportunities for people with physical impairments to take part in sport. Based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement, WheelPower is at the heart of wheelchair sport.
While sport can develop confidence and improve health, it’s also a great way to put a smile on the faces of those taking part. During 2022/23, WheelPower provided opportunities for disabled people to access and participate in sport and activity across the country on 72,165 occasions.
“Thank you very much for an enjoyable day. I felt well looked after by everybody involved, I felt that they cared about us. You have woken up in me the thought that I could get back to golf given the right environment.” said one attendee.
Events like these are essential in demonstrating that disability is not a barrier to enjoying and excelling in sports. We look forward to continuing our partnership and exploring more ways to make sports accessible and enjoyable for everyone. We are especially excited to host similar events at other Get Golfing venues in the future, extending these enriching experiences to even more communities.
The Learn to Play Golf Day at Pyrford Lakes not only provided an unforgettable experience for participants but also set a new standard for inclusive sporting events. Get Golfing remains committed to honoring the wishes of its late founder, who envisioned a world where golf is accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Broken Playaz, WheelPower, The Golf Trust and Kai Liang (Get Golfing Ambassador & General Manager of GolfJoy) for their invaluable support in making the day as successful as it was. Their contributions were instrumental in bringing this vision to life and ensuring that the event was a resounding success.
